Paul Chen Swords

Paul Chen or "Hanwei" swords are among the best in the sword industry, and this Practical Plus Katana is a fantastic introduction to Paul Chen swords. It looks great, cuts great, and has a very reasonable price.

The "Practical Plus" Katana is a new addition to the Hanwei Samurai sword line, providing a very economical cutting sword as dependable as the Practical Katana (SH1070), but using more traditional fittings and construction methods. The blade is forged and differentially tempered (HRC60 edge, HRC40 back) and the hamon is prominent. The Practical Plus features genuine Same (Rayskin) on the Tsuka, with a wrap (Tsuka-Ito) specially developed for its gripping qualities. The long tang is double-pegged for security. The fittings of the Practical Plus are decorated in a Japanese Dogwood motif with dragon menuki, and the handsome Tsuba is of an iron "sunburst" design with a brass habaki.

Cold Steel Swords
Imperial Series

If you're not familiar with Cold Steel products, they have a great reputation for the toughest blades in the industry. They're originally known for their superior knives, but in the last few years, they've ventured off into sword-making. And true to their reputation, these samurai swords are both tough and beautiful.

I've cut with one of these and it's a fine sword for the beginner. It has a very general shape, well balanced, and tough as nails.

This is a great starter sword for someone who wants a functional sword that can take a beating and keep on looking good. The price listed here is actually about a 40% savings if you buy through this link (southwestblades.com) – that's a fantastic price.

Cold Steel Swords
Warrior Series

If you don't want to spend that much for the Cold Steal Imperial series, here's the next best thing: the Warrior Series Katana.

The only real difference between the Imperial Series and the Warrior Series is the look. The Warrior Series doesn't have the expensive mirror finish. It has a more practical finish that will stand up nicely to wear-and-tear.

The Warrior Katana is just as tough, and you'll be just as happy if you don't need the bells and wistles of the Imperial Series.
